Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was convicted of orchestrating a armed takeover in last fall and handed more than 27 years in incarceration, but he was staying under confinement pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a safety action after fresh information came to light.

This included seeking to disable his tracking device and a summons to a public vigil that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the custody, Justice Moraes said information from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the protest called by his son.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a legislator, called for a meeting of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on online platforms on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or see it all from your phone there on your sofa? I invite you to fight with us."

He said the vigil would be so followers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the High Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that Bolsonaro be allowed to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he required frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was determined responsible of leading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the 2022 election to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

The former president called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him competing in the 2026 national vote.
