Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for hours when numerous of them floated into the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become not financially viable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
